The Costs to Corporations of Poor Employee Health

You are probably already aware of the impact that employees who are not at their optimum health has on your bottom line, but a review of the data reveals some illuminating statistical evidence.

According to the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Productivity losses related to personal and family health problems cost U.S. employers $1,685 per employee per year, or $225.8 billion annually.

Disease
According to the National Health Care Statistics, the typical American diet is responsible for most of the preventable diseases, including 91% of diabetes, 82% of heart disease, and 71% of colon cancer. How much is your company paying out in health care premiums for employees who suffer from these preventable conditions?

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, stress-related disorders are fast becoming the most prevalent reason for worker disability, costing between $20-$30 billion annually due to worker absenteeism.

Obesity
Obesity increases workplace costs.  The annual per capita increase in medical expenditures and absenteeism associated with obesity ranges from $450 to $2,500 per obese employee.  The estimated cost of obesity at a firm with 1,000 employees is about $285,000 per year. Obese employees were absent 14 days a year more than normal-weight employees. Also the frequency of absenteeism of more than 7 days was significantly higher. The differences in absenteeism between obese and normal-weight employees were larger for employees who did not practice sport regularly.
